Four students with academic excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), were recognized by the Kallman Foundation with collaboration of the Colegio de Ingenieros de Chile (Chilean Engineers Association) and the Chilean Air Force Space Directorate.
The award ceremony was carried out on Wednesday, April 10, where four Chilean students obtained the Astronaut Al Worden Scholarship Endeavour Challenge, who will live the unforgettable experience of practical training. There were other group of young people selected from different countries, at a NASA camp in the United States. Their names are Antonia Covacevich, Claudia Ulloa, Catalina Reyes, and Gabriela Urzúa.
The activity, presided over by the President and CEO of Kallman Worldwide, Tom Kallman, was attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Bernadette M. Mehan, the Astronaut and former NASA Space Shuttle Major, Mike Bloomfield, the Major General (A), Luis Saéz Collantes, the President of Colegio de Ingenieros de Chile, Hernán de Solminihac, among other authorities.
The winners, known as “Mission Crew #15” were selected in a nationwide contest. They will travel in July to visit Washington DC and to attend Space Camp under the leadership of Rosita Guerra, teacher at the school Escuela Arturo Merino Benítez.
During the activity, Bloomfield confirmed the importance of the Endeavour Scholarship, because it connects the young people with the world’s interest in space and strengthens the collaboration bonds between countries.
Finally, Tom Kallman and the abovementioned authorities delivered to the four young Chileans women and their teacher-guide, the clothing and badge corresponding to their next mission.
